Voter list revision begins in 12 states and union territories from today

Voter list revision: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in three Union Territories and nine states starting Tuesday. The exercise aims to update voter lists ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in some states.

The process will be completed by December 4, after which the draft electoral rolls will be released on December 9. The final list is scheduled for publication on February 7, 2026.

The SSR will be conducted in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Among these, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and West Bengal are set to hold Assembly elections in 2026. However, the Tamil Nadu government has expressed its intent to approach the Supreme Court to seek a stay on the SSR, claiming procedural irregularities.

The Election Commission recently concluded the revision process in Bihar, where the updated list has already been finalized. Officials said that the ongoing revision aims to ensure accuracy by incorporating new voters, removing duplicates, and correcting errors in existing records.

The exercise will allow citizens to verify their names, make corrections, and apply for inclusion or deletion through online and offline modes. Booth-level officers across the participating regions will assist in the process.

The ECI has instructed all chief electoral officers to conduct awareness campaigns to ensure maximum participation, particularly among young voters and first-time applicants.

The special revision is part of the Commission’s annual drive to maintain transparency and inclusiveness in the electoral process, ahead of a crucial political year when multiple states head to polls.
