Russia successfully tests nuclear-powered Burevestnik missile; Putin says it can outsmart any defense system

Russia: Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, Russia has successfully tested its nuclear-powered and nuclear-capable cruise missile Burevestnik, President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Sunday. The missile, he claimed, possesses capabilities far superior to any current or emerging defense systems in the world.

“This is a unique missile that no other country in the world possesses,” Putin said, describing Burevestnik as a new-generation strategic weapon. With its nuclear propulsion system, the missile is capable of traveling across continents without refueling and can remain airborne for days, potentially reaching any corner of the globe.

According to Russian defense sources, the missile covered nearly 14,000 kilometers in just 15 hours during testing, though officials clarified this distance is not its maximum range. Analysts believe this successful test is Russia’s message to the West that it remains militarily unshaken despite mounting international pressure over the Ukraine war.

The test also coincided with a massive nuclear forces drill across Russia, underscoring Moscow’s intent to showcase its military preparedness and technological superiority. The Burevestnik joins Russia’s expanding nuclear arsenal, alongside hypersonic weapons such as the Kinzhal and Avangard, signaling a new phase in global arms competition.

Meanwhile, in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump—who had earlier warned Moscow of severe consequences—appeared to have softened his tone following the test. He urged Putin to focus on ending the Ukraine war rather than developing new missiles, marking a shift from his earlier confrontational stance.

With the Burevestnik test, Russia has not only strengthened its strategic deterrence but also reignited Cold War-era fears of a renewed nuclear arms race.
