Tea vendor arrested for confining teacher during caste survey

Caste Survey: A tea vendor has been arrested by the Kodigehalli police for allegedly misbehaving with and confining a government school teacher who had come to his residence for the caste census survey.

The accused, identified as Sandeep, a resident of Bhadrappa Layout, allegedly obstructed government duty and behaved indecently with Susheelamma, the teacher who visited his home on Wednesday morning to collect census data. Acting on her complaint, the police arrested Sandeep and remanded him to Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, officials confirmed.

Sandeep, a native of Nagamangala in Mandya district, runs a tea stall at Goraguntepalya in Yeshwanthpur and lives with his family in Bhadrappa Layout. When the teacher approached him for caste census information, he allegedly questioned her harshly, saying, “Who are you to ask about my caste? Why did you come to my house? Who gave you my address?” and accused her of being a “fake enumerator.”

When the teacher, Susheelamma, tried to leave the premises saying it was fine if he did not want to provide details, Sandeep reportedly locked the gate and confined her inside, demanding that she call her supervising officer to the spot.

Upon receiving information, other staff members and the Block Level Officer (BLO) rushed to the location, where the accused also misbehaved with them. The police later intervened and brought the situation under control.

Following a complaint by the education department officials, the Kodigehalli police registered an FIR for obstructing government duty and other relevant charges. Sandeep was subsequently taken into custody and produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
