Huawei Mate 90 Series Expected Soon as Foldable Launch May Be Delayed

Huawei is preparing to unveil its Mate 90 series in the coming months, but reports suggest the next generation foldable smartphone may not arrive alongside the flagship lineup, marking a possible shift in launch strategy.

Huawei appears to be gearing up for its next major smartphone release with the Mate 90 series expected to debut in the coming months. However, industry chatter suggests that the company may separate its foldable ambitions from this launch cycle, delaying the introduction of its next foldable device. This marks a noticeable change from last year, when Huawei paired its flagship Mate 80 lineup with foldable models in the same launch window.

According to a post shared by tipster RuryRen on the microblogging platform Weibo, the Mate 90 series is likely to be announced in September. The same leak also indicates that Huawei’s next foldable, expected to be the Mate XT 2, may not be part of this launch. Interestingly, Huawei had previously showcased foldable devices alongside the Mate 80 series, making this shift a point of attention for the industry.

The timing of the Mate 90 series could place Huawei directly in competition with other major launches expected around the same period. Reports suggest that Xiaomi 18 series, iQOO 16 and even Apple’s iPhone 18 lineup could all be part of the same competitive September window, setting the stage for a busy flagship season across brands.

While anticipation builds around the Mate 90 series, Huawei continues to expand its current portfolio. Earlier this year in February, the company introduced the Mate 80 Pro in global markets, featuring a 6.75 inch OLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The phone delivered a balanced focus on performance and imaging with its triple camera setup, led by a 50 megapixel primary sensor with OIS, a 40 megapixel ultra wide lens and a 48 megapixel macro telephoto camera.

On the front, the Mate 80 Pro offered a 13 megapixel autofocus selfie camera designed for both video calls and wide angle capture. Powering the device was a 5750 mAh battery supported by 100W wired fast charging and 80W wireless charging, placing it firmly in the fast charging premium category.

Huawei’s foldable direction was last highlighted with the Mate X7, which featured an 8 inch flexible LTPO OLED inner display and a 6.49 inch curved cover screen. The device packed a 5600 mAh battery with support for 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, continuing Huawei’s push in the foldable segment.

With the Mate 90 series now on the horizon and foldable plans possibly shifting to a later timeline, Huawei seems to be adjusting its launch strategy while preparing for intense competition in one of the most crowded flagship seasons of the year.
