Karnataka Government Links Hospital Staff Attendance to Salaries to Improve Public Healthcare

The Karnataka Health Department plans a facial attendance system with GPS tracking for government hospital staff aiming to improve accountability ensure timely patient care and reduce absenteeism across the state.

The Karnataka government is preparing to introduce a stricter attendance system for doctors and healthcare workers in government hospitals as part of a wider effort to improve patient services. The Health Department plans to connect staff attendance directly with salary payments while introducing a facial recognition based attendance system supported by GPS tracking.

The decision comes after repeated complaints from patients, especially in rural areas, about doctors and medical staff not being available during working hours. Many people have reported delays in receiving treatment because healthcare professionals were either absent or left hospitals soon after marking their attendance. Such complaints have raised concerns over the quality of public healthcare and the need for stronger monitoring.

According to the proposed plan, doctors and other hospital employees will use a mobile application with facial recognition technology to mark their attendance. The system is also expected to verify whether employees remain within the designated hospital premises during duty hours. If a staff member leaves the workplace without authorization or reports late for duty, the information will be recorded automatically.

Officials believe the technology driven system will improve discipline and ensure doctors remain available for patients throughout their scheduled shifts. The department also intends to use attendance records while processing salaries, making regular presence at work an important factor in wage payments.

The new mechanism is expected to cover employees working in government hospitals, public health centers and offices functioning under the Karnataka Health Department. Authorities say the move is aimed at creating greater transparency and ensuring that public healthcare facilities function more efficiently.

Health officials have acknowledged that absenteeism has been a long standing issue in some government hospitals. In several reported cases, employees allegedly marked biometric attendance and later left the premises for personal work or private practice. The proposed facial attendance system is expected to address such practices by providing real time monitoring.

The initiative also reflects the state government’s broader focus on improving accountability among public sector employees. Senior leaders have repeatedly emphasized the importance of punctuality and regular attendance in government offices, and the Health Department’s latest proposal follows the same direction.

If implemented successfully, the new attendance policy could strengthen public confidence in government hospitals by ensuring doctors and healthcare workers are available when patients need them most. However, its effectiveness will depend on smooth implementation, proper monitoring and consistent enforcement across healthcare institutions throughout Karnataka.
