He is credited with eliminating a significant number of criminals and gangsters in police encounters, which earned him the sobriquet. Daya Nayak was born in a village in the Karkala taluk of Udupi district, Karnataka, into a Konkani-speaking family.
As the youngest son of Badda and Radha Nayak, he studied in a Kannada-medium school built by his grandfather until the 7th standard. In 1979, his father asked him to move to Mumbai to earn a living and help support the family. In Mumbai, Nayak worked at a hotel, where he also lived and studied on the hotel’s porch.
He completed his Class 12 from a municipal school in Goregaon and later graduated from CES College in Andheri. After graduation, he worked as a supervisor with a plumber, earning a monthly salary of Rs 3,000, before joining the Mumbai Police in 1995.
Nayak became a key member of the elite “encounter squad,” which was tasked with breaking the back of the Mumbai underworld. He is credited with neutralizing around 80 criminals linked to various syndicates, including those of Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. His career has inspired several Bollywood films, most notably Ab Tak Chhappan.
Controversies and Suspension: Nayak’s career faced turbulence, including a period of suspension after he was investigated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on charges of having assets disproportionate to his known income. He was eventually acquitted of all charges and reinstated into the force.
Recent Roles: In recent years, Nayak was part of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and played a role in high-profile cases, including the investigation into the gelatin sticks found outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence.
Just few days before his retirement, Nayak, along with three other senior inspectors, was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). He retired on July 31, 2025, after nearly three decades of service. Nayak himself expressed his gratitude and pride on social media, stating he was deeply satisfied with his service to the nation.
