MRPL gas leak in Refinery tank, 2 staff dead
MRPL gas leak: Two workers of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) tragically died on Saturday morning during a tank inspection at the refinery’s Oil Movement Section (OMS). MRPL gas leak in Refinery tank, 2 staff dead.
The incident occurred around 8 AM when the two field operators, identified as Deep Chandra Bhartiya and Bijil Prasad, went to inspect a suspected malfunction in tank FB7029 A, a dry slop service tank with a floating roof.
Both men were found unconscious on the tank’s rooftop platform. Despite immediate medical attention and transfer to a hospital, they were declared dead. Another MRPL operator, Vinayak Myageri, who attempted to rescue them, was also affected and has been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru, where his condition is reported as stable and he remains under observation.
MRPL has promptly formed a high-level investigation committee comprising Group General Managers to ascertain the cause of the accident. All statutory authorities have been informed as per protocol.
This unfortunate incident has once again brought to the forefront concerns regarding safety protocols in high-risk refinery environments, as the families of the deceased await answers.
