Fresh Tribal Clashes Erupt in Manipur as More Than 20 Houses Are Burned

Fresh violence broke out in Manipur's Kamjong district near the India Myanmar border, where armed clashes between tribal groups left more than 20 houses destroyed and prompted heightened security.

Fresh violence has flared up in Manipur after armed clashes between tribal groups were reported in Kamjong district near the India Myanmar border. The latest confrontation resulted in more than 20 houses being set ablaze, forcing security agencies to step up surveillance in the affected villages.

According to officials, the violence began when armed individuals allegedly attacked a village, leading to the destruction of several homes. The situation escalated later in the day as retaliatory attacks were reported, causing additional damage to residential properties.

Authorities have deployed extra security personnel to the region and launched search operations to prevent further escalation. Officials said efforts are underway to restore normalcy and maintain peace in the sensitive border district.

Investigators believe the latest violence is linked to earlier tensions following the deaths of six members of the Naga community, whose bodies were recovered in Kangpokpi district in June. The incident had already intensified mistrust between communities and triggered protests and blockades in several areas.

Disputes over the movement of essential supplies to Kuki inhabited regions are also believed to have contributed to rising tensions. Despite the large scale property damage, officials confirmed that no casualties were reported in Wednesday’s clashes.

The fresh violence has sparked strong reactions from community organizations. A leading Kuki group alleged that villages inhabited by its community were deliberately targeted and demanded an independent investigation into the security arrangements in the area.

Meanwhile, recent efforts by Kuki community leaders to express regret over the earlier killings have failed to ease tensions. Several Naga organizations rejected the apology and continued to demand the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Authorities remain on high alert as the situation continues to be closely monitored.
