Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy Under Pressure; Will Shubman Gill Lead India’s T20 Team?

Reports suggest that the BCCI is unlikely to consider him a long-term captain despite handing him the leadership role.

Team India’s newly appointed T20 captain, Shreyas Iyer, is set to lead the T20 team in upcoming series against Afghanistan, England, and Ireland, as well as at the Asian Games. However, reports suggest that the BCCI is unlikely to consider him a long-term captain depite handing him the leadership role.

Iyer was appointed T20 captain largely because of his impressive leadership and performances as a captain during IPL 2026. Following his appointment for four consecutive assignments, many believed he would become India’s full-time T20 captain.

However, the BCCI is now reportedly reassessing its plans. Although Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as captain, concerns have emerged over his individual performances. While he may have guided the team to victories, his batting form has failed to meet expectations.

Iyer struggled during the Afghanistan series and now faces crucial assignments against England and Ireland. He will also lead the team at the Asian Games. If India fails to achieve the desired results or if his batting form does not improve, his captaincy could come under serious threat.

The situation mirrors that of Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to several victories but eventually lost his place in the team due to poor batting performances. Now, Iyer appears to be facing a similar challenge. To retain the captaincy, he will need to deliver strong performances with the bat in the upcoming series. If he loses the leadership role, Shubman Gill is considered the frontrunner to take over.

Gill has already impressed as captain of India’s Test and ODI teams and is currently in excellent batting form. Keeping the future of Indian cricket in mind, the BCCI is reportedly considering him as a long-term leadership option for the T20 side.
