Assistant Engineer Under Vigilance Scanner After Massive Asset Seizure in Odisha

A vigilance investigation in Odisha uncovered multiple properties, plots, cash and valuables linked to a government engineer, triggering fresh attention on alleged disproportionate assets cases.

A major vigilance operation in Odisha has revealed an extensive collection of assets allegedly linked to a government engineer, leaving investigators surprised by the scale of the recovery. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the large amount of cash and properties discovered during the searches.

The official at the center of the investigation is Baikunthanath Behera, who is serving as an Assistant Engineer with the Integrated Tribal Development Agency in Baliguda of Kandhamal district. Authorities launched the probe following allegations related to assets reportedly disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Acting on a search warrant issued by a Special Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar, vigilance teams carried out simultaneous raids at nine different locations connected to the engineer and his associates.

During the searches, officials reportedly uncovered multiple high value properties, including several multi storey buildings and numerous land parcels. Investigators also recovered gold ornaments and a substantial amount of cash from bank lockers and other locations.

According to vigilance officials, cash amounting to nearly Rs 2 crore was seized during the operation. In addition, documents relating to 13 plots and several residential properties were found and are being examined as part of the investigation.

Authorities stated that the overall value of the recovered assets is expected to run into several crores of rupees. Officials noted that such a large seizure is among the most significant recoveries made in recent disproportionate assets investigations in the state.

The case has attracted widespread attention because the engineer reportedly began his government career decades ago with a modest monthly salary. Investigators are now examining financial records, property documents and other evidence to determine the source of the assets.

Further inquiries are underway, and vigilance authorities said the final assessment of the seized properties and valuables will be completed after detailed verification and valuation procedures.
