Vijay Oath Ceremony: In a historic shift for Tamil Nadu politics, C. Joseph Vijay, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as the Chief Minister on Sunday, May 10, 2026. TVK chief Vijay took oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

The ceremony took place at 10:00 AM at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office.

Government Formation & Support:

Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party in its debut assembly election, winning 108 seats. Lacking the 118-seat majority mark, Vijay secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member house.

The government is backed by a coalition including the Congress (5 seats), CPI (2 seats), CPI(M) (2 seats), VCK (2 seats), and IUML (2 seats).  This marks the first time in 59 years (since 1967) that a party other than the DMK or AIADMK has led the state government.

Alongside Vijay, nine ministers were also sworn into the state cabinet. Key members include:

‘Bussy’ N. Anand (T. Nagar)

Aadhav Arjuna (Villivakkam)

K.A. Sengottaiyan (Gobichettipalayam)

K.G. Arunraaj (Tiruchengodu)

The Governor has directed the new Chief Minister to seek a vote of confidence in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on or before May 13, 2026.

Vijay born into a prominent Chennai film family on June 22, 1974, to director S. A. Chandrasekhar and singer Shoba, Vijay eventually transitioned from his visual communications studies at Loyola College to a legendary acting career and a complex personal life involving his two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha, and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam.
