Trump says US to reduce sanctions as India halts oil imports from Russia, strengthens ties

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will reduce sanctions on India following New Delhi’s decision to stop purchasing oil from Russia.

Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of Sergio Gaur as India’s ambassador to the US, Trump said that India’s reduction in Russian oil imports had significantly lowered the burden of tariffs previously imposed.

Addressing the press, Trump explained, “India was subjected to higher tariffs because of its oil purchases from Russia. Now that they have stopped buying, the tariffs have been considerably reduced. We will accordingly lower them further.”

Trump also emphasized that Washington is working toward a fresh trade agreement with India. “We are negotiating a new deal with India, which will differ from previous arrangements.

While they may not be fully pleased with me currently, they will appreciate the United States once again. This will be a fair and mutually beneficial agreement. Earlier, previous deals were not equitable, but now we are moving closer,” he stated.

Highlighting India’s global importance, Trump lauded the country as one of the world’s oldest civilizations and a major economic power with a population exceeding 1.5 billion. He added that India’s rapidly growing middle class and strategic location in the Indo-Pacific make it a key economic and security partner.

Trump also noted the strong personal rapport between the two nations’ leadership. “We have an excellent relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sergio has already developed a personal friendship with the Prime Minister. India is a fast-growing nation with immense potential. Our cooperation will strengthen both nations strategically and economically,” he said.

The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the United States to balance international sanctions on Russia while maintaining strategic partnerships in Asia. India’s decision to curb Russian oil purchases aligns with Washington’s broader policy objectives, and the easing of tariffs is expected to incentivize further bilateral trade and investment.

Trump underscored that strategic and economic collaboration with India will continue to be a priority for his administration. “India is a crucial partner in the Indo-Pacific region. We aim to expand trade, enhance security cooperation, and foster long-term partnerships that benefit both nations,” he said.

The reduction of tariffs is likely to have far-reaching implications for industries spanning energy, technology, and defense. Analysts suggest that the move could accelerate the signing of a comprehensive trade agreement, boosting bilateral commerce and reinforcing geopolitical ties.

Trump concluded by reaffirming US commitment to India: “We respect India’s contributions to global stability and development. Our partnership will ensure mutual prosperity and security. Together, we can achieve unprecedented growth and strengthen our shared interests in the region.”

This development signals a significant shift in US-India relations, underscoring both nations’ intent to deepen economic ties while navigating the complex geopolitics surrounding Russia and the Indo-Pacific region.
