Rumors of Imran Khan’s Death Spark Tensions in Pakistan, Authorities Enforce Section 144 in Rawalpindi

Pakistan: Tensions have escalated in Pakistan after rumors circulated that former Prime Minister Imran Khan had died in jail. The news has sparked widespread anxiety, particularly in Rawalpindi, where authorities are taking precautionary measures to avoid any public unrest.

The Pakistani government has imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings and protests in Rawalpindi from December 1 to 3 to ensure the situation remains under control.

The rumors of Imran Khan’s death began circulating recently, and there are growing concerns that they might lead to significant unrest in Pakistan, especially in Rawalpindi, a city with a history of political activism and unrest.

Imran Khan’s supporters and his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are said to be preparing for large protests. To prevent any disorder, authorities have enforced a ban on gatherings, prohibiting groups of five or more people from assembling.

The local administration issued orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which restricts public meetings, rallies, protests, and any gatherings that could disrupt public order.

Security Concerns and Proactive Measures

The situation has been described as potentially volatile, with reports suggesting that certain groups might attempt to target sensitive areas in Rawalpindi. Intelligence agencies have raised alarms over the possibility of violence, as several groups are said to be plotting aggressive actions, including protests and confrontations with law enforcement.

In response, the local administration has enforced a strict ban on weapons, explosives, and other potentially dangerous materials that could be used in violent protests.

The government has also prohibited the use of vehicles to carry more than one person and banned the use of loudspeakers and other sound equipment that could incite crowds. These measures come as a response to security threats identified by intelligence agencies and to maintain peace and order during this critical period.

Family’s Concern and Growing Doubts

Amid the growing unrest, Imran Khan’s family, particularly his son, Qasim Khan, has voiced strong concerns over his condition. They have accused the authorities of concealing information regarding Imran Khan’s health and safety.

In a statement, Qasim Khan expressed his frustration, stating, “The authorities are hiding something about our father’s condition. We don’t know whether he is alive, injured, or in danger. The lack of access and information is causing immense mental anguish to our family.”

Imran Khan’s family members have raised alarms about the lack of direct contact with him, despite judicial orders granting them the right to visit him. They have demanded clear evidence of his well-being. Their concerns have only intensified after authorities were initially reluctant to confirm whether Khan was alive or if there had been any foul play.

Government’s Denial and Efforts to Calm the Public

In response to the rumors, jail authorities have repeatedly stated that Imran Khan is alive and receiving all necessary amenities while in custody. They have assured the public that he is in good health and that any rumors of his death are false. However, the government’s attempt to reassure the public has not quelled the mounting anxiety.

As the situation continues to unfold, Rawalpindi remains on high alert, with police and security forces deployed throughout the city. The authorities are taking extra precautions to prevent any violence or political instability that could arise from the ongoing rumors about Khan’s health.
