Pakistan’s alleged mediation role in Middle East tensions sparks political debate in India

New Delhi: Reports suggesting that Pakistan may be playing a mediatory role between the United States, Israel, and Iran amid the ongoing conflict-like situation in the Middle East have triggered a sharp political debate in India.
Reacting to these international media reports, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh termed the development a “serious setback” for India’s diplomatic standing, if proven true. He expressed concern that Pakistan acting as a bridge between global powers could undermine India’s influence on the international stage.
Citing multiple global media reports, Ramesh said Pakistan is reportedly being used as an intermediary to facilitate communication between the US-Israel bloc on one side and Iran on the other. “If these reports are true, they represent a severe rebuff to India,” he remarked, adding that such a role enhances Pakistan’s strategic importance globally.
The Congress leader also criticised the Central government, alleging that while India may have achieved certain military successes, it has lagged behind in diplomatic engagement. Referring to the post-Operation Sindoor scenario, he claimed that Pakistan’s global outreach and communication strategies appear to be more effective than India’s in the current geopolitical context.
Ramesh further pointed out that Pakistan, which was earlier grappling with political and economic instability, is now regaining prominence at the international level. He also highlighted improving ties between Pakistan and the US, citing instances such as Pakistan’s Army Chief being hosted at the White House as a sign of growing proximity.
He did not spare Prime Minister Narendra Modi either, criticising his recent visit to Israel. According to Ramesh, the visit, which took place before the escalation of tensions, was diplomatically miscalculated and may have cost India an opportunity to act as a neutral mediator in the crisis.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington is in touch with senior Iranian officials to explore the possibility of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. However, Iran has dismissed such claims, terming them “fake news” and denying any ongoing talks.
The White House has also refrained from confirming reports of backchannel meetings in Islamabad, maintaining that the situation remains sensitive and cannot be publicly verified without official announcements.
As tensions continue in the Middle East, the possibility of Pakistan playing a larger diplomatic role has sparked intense political discussions in India, with implications for regional geopolitics and India’s foreign policy positioning.
