Iran missile strike hits Dimona, raises fears over nuclear safety
Jerusalem: Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Iran launched a missile strike targeting the southern Israeli city of Dimona, leaving at least 47 people injured and triggering global concern over the safety of sensitive nuclear facilities in the region.
According to emergency officials, the attack struck a residential building in Dimona, a town known for hosting Israel’s key nuclear research facility. Among the injured, a 12-year-old boy is reported to be in critical condition, while a 30-year-old woman suffered injuries from shattered glass. Several others sustained minor injuries, and some were hurt while rushing to shelters during the strike.
Rescue teams from Magen David Adom (MDA) confirmed that multiple victims were shifted to nearby hospitals, including Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, where at least 14 people are currently undergoing treatment. Local residents said the impact caused damage to older houses in the vicinity, though many residents had taken refuge in shelters, preventing a higher casualty toll.
The missile strike has raised serious alarms as Dimona houses Israel’s highly sensitive nuclear installation. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated that it is aware of the incident but has not found any immediate evidence of damage to the nuclear research facility. However, it urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that its air defense systems detected the incoming missile but failed to intercept it. An investigation has been launched to determine the reasons behind the failure of the interception systems.
Iran, on its part, claimed that the strike was a retaliatory measure following earlier Israeli actions targeting its nuclear infrastructure. The latest attack highlights the intensifying cycle of retaliation between Iran and Israel, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
Dimona is also known as “Little India” due to the presence of a significant Indian-origin Jewish community, many of whom trace their roots to Maharashtra. The town has a strong cultural connection to India, with Indian shops, cuisine, and Marathi language widely present. Nearly 30 percent of the town’s population—around 7,500 residents—belongs to this community.
The attack has therefore sparked concern among Indian-origin families living in the region, as well as in India, given their close cultural and familial ties.
Experts warn that any escalation involving nuclear-linked locations could have far-reaching global consequences. The strike on Dimona, even without direct damage to nuclear infrastructure, signals a dangerous shift in the conflict, where high-value and sensitive targets are increasingly at risk.
As tensions continue to rise, the international community has called for restraint, fearing that further escalation could push the region toward a full-scale war with severe humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
