Iran claims downing of US F/A-18; America rejects as ‘false’ amid rising tensions

Tehran,: Tensions in the Middle East have escalated further as Iran claimed it had shot down a US F/A-18 fighter jet despite a temporary ceasefire announcement by former US President Donald Trump. The claim, however, has been strongly denied by the United States, which termed it “false” after conducting a verification.

According to Iranian state media, the country’s forces targeted an American fighter jet during an operation over Iranian airspace. The claim was amplified by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which stated that it had successfully struck the aircraft using advanced air defence systems.

Iran’s state-run Press TV also shared a video on social media platform X, purportedly showing an aircraft losing altitude after being hit mid-air. The post claimed that the IRGC had targeted a US F/A-18 fighter jet, though it did not provide specific details about the location of the strike, the extent of damage, or the condition of the pilot.

In addition to the F/A-18 claim, reports also suggested that Iran had taken responsibility for damaging a US F-35 stealth fighter jet, which was allegedly forced to make an emergency landing at an American base in the region. However, these claims remain unverified.

The US military responded swiftly, expressing concern over the reports and initiating a fact-check. The United States Central Command conducted an internal review of its aerial assets and operations in the region.

Following the assessment, CENTCOM categorically rejected Iran’s claims. In a statement posted on X, it said, “Reports that an Iranian air defence system has shot down a US F/A-18 are false. No US aircraft have been lost or damaged.”

The denial comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are already high, with ongoing joint military operations reportedly being carried out by the US and Israel against Iranian targets under what has been referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.” Reports suggest that thousands of aircraft are being deployed in the broader regional conflict scenario, though official confirmations remain limited.

The conflicting narratives from Iran and the United States highlight the growing information warfare accompanying the military tensions. While Iran’s claims have gained traction across various media platforms, the lack of independent verification has raised questions about their authenticity.

Military analysts note that such claims and counterclaims are not uncommon during periods of heightened conflict, often aimed at shaping public perception and strategic messaging.

With both sides holding firm to their positions, the situation in the Middle East remains volatile. Observers warn that misinformation or miscalculation could further escalate the conflict, making clarity and verification crucial in the coming days.
