MLA Aravind Bellad takes strong objection to Quran recitation at government function

Quran Recitation At Government Function: A controversy has erupted after verses from the Quran were recited during a government event in Hubli, allegedly violating official protocol.

The incident occurred during a foundation stone-laying ceremony for civic and infrastructure projects worth Rs 10 crore, organized by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department, and HESCOM in Vishal Nagar.

Labor Minister Santosh Lad, who presided over the event, even paused his speech when the Azaan (Islamic call to prayer) began. The event, which was officially a government function, is now under scrutiny for allowing Quran recitation on stage.

According to reports, senior officials including HDMC Commissioner Dr. Rudresh Ghali and Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil were present when the religious verses were read. Critics allege the event resembled a Congress party program rather than a neutral state function, with party banners displayed prominently.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Arvind Bellad, has written to the Chief Secretary demanding action against the officials responsible for the breach. He argued that allowing religious rituals at state events undermines secular governance and government neutrality.

Sharing a video of the event on social media, Bellad said, “The Congress government has turned administration into a stage for vote-bank appeasement. Beginning a government program with Quran recitation is a violation of the sanctity of state platforms meant for all citizens.”

Bellad further accused the Congress of “selective secularism,” saying the party was using religion to divide communities and distract from governance failures. He urged the government to uphold constitutional values and ensure state events remain secular and inclusive.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions, with opposition leaders calling it a dangerous precedent and Congress supporters defending it as a gesture of harmony.
