UPI New Rules from August 1: Big changes in GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm
UPI New Rules from August 1: Big changes are indeed coming to UPI, affecting apps like GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm, starting August 1, 2025. These new rules, introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), aim to improve the system’s efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance security. UPI New Rules from August 1: Big changes in GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
UPI New Rules from August 1 key changes:
Limits on Balance Checks: You will only be able to check your account balance 50 times per day per UPI app. This is intended to reduce the load on servers caused by excessive balance inquiries.

Limits on Viewing Linked Bank Accounts: Users will be restricted to viewing the list of bank accounts linked to their mobile number only 25 times per day. This also aims to cut down on unnecessary API calls.
Fixed Time Slots for UPI AutoPay: Automatic payments for subscriptions, EMIs, and utility bills will now be processed during pre-defined, off-peak time slots. These are typically:
Before 10:00 AM
Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
After 9:30 PM
This change is designed to reduce congestion during peak hours.
Limits on Transaction Status Checks: If a payment fails or is pending, you can now check its status only 3 times per day, with a mandatory 90-second gap between each check. This is to prevent system overload from rapid refreshes.
Account Name Verification (Already in effect since June 30, 2025): Before confirming a UPI payment, the registered name of the recipient will be displayed. This feature is meant to enhance security and minimize wrong transactions or fraud.
No Change in Transaction Limits: Importantly, the maximum UPI payment allowed remains the same: up to Rs 1 lakh per transaction for most cases, and up to Rs 5 lakh for specific categories like healthcare or education.
Mobile Number Inactivity May Cause UPI Deactivation: If your mobile number linked to UPI is inactive for 90 consecutive days, your UPI account might be automatically deactivated for security purposes. Users are advised to use their UPI-linked phone number at least once every three months to keep their account active.
Stricter Guidelines for Banks and UPI Apps: NPCI has directed banks and Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to strictly monitor API usage. Non-compliance could lead to penalties, API access restrictions, or suspension of new user onboarding.

Why these changes?
NPCI states that these changes are being implemented to:
De-burden servers and reduce system overload.
Enhance transaction speed and reliability.
Improve overall system performance, especially during peak hours.
Address complaints about transaction failures and delays observed in recent months.
For most regular users, no immediate action is required. The changes will be rolled out automatically through your UPI apps. However, if you are a heavy user who frequently checks balances or transaction statuses, or if you rely heavily on UPI AutoPay, you should be aware of these new limits and timings.
