IMD issued heavy rainfall: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather warning as a fresh Western Disturbance is set to impact North and Central India. IMD issued heavy rainfall alert for next 72 hours in these states.
While the region is currently experiencing a brief lull with cold wave conditions and dense fog, a new “wet spell” is expected to begin on the night of January 30, 2026.
Here is the breakdown of the 72-hour alert starting from January 31:
Hailstorm & Rain Alert (Jan 31 – Feb 2): The IMD has warned that hailstorms will make a comeback, primarily affecting the plains and central regions.
Rajasthan: A specific alert has been issued for the Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Bikaner divisions. Heavy rain and hailstorms are likely from January 31 to February 3, which may impact the heavy wedding season in cities like Sikar and Alwar.
Other States: Isolated hailstorms and thunderstorms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh starting January 31.
Wind Speed: Thunderstorms may be accompanied by gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph.
Heavy Snowfall & Rain in the Hills:
The Western Himalayan Region will bear the brunt of the moisture. Heavy Snowfall & Rain expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The heaviest snowfall and rainfall are predicted for February 1. Travelers are advised to check for avalanche alerts and road closures in high-altitude areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal.
Immediate Conditions (Jan 29 – Jan 30): Before the rain starts, northern India remains under a “Yellow Alert”. Temperatures are expected to stay low in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.
Visibility will be significantly reduced during morning and night hours across the Indo-Gangetic plains. The 10 states/regions under the broader 72-hour rain, snow, or hailstorm watch include:

Farmer Advisory: With Rabi crops like wheat, mustard, and gram already at a sensitive stage, the IMD suggests taking precautions against potential hail damage and strong winds.
