Driver of car that exploded near Red Fort received Rs 20 lakh through illegal channels, says report
New Delhi: The driver of the Hyundai i20 car that exploded near the Red Fort earlier this week had received Rs 20 lakh through illegal financial channels, NDTV reported, quoting sources.
According to investigators, the accused, Umar Mohammad alias Umar Nabi from Nuh in Haryana, purchased large quantities of fertilisers in cash from a local market. These materials are suspected to have been used to prepare the explosive device that detonated on Monday evening.
The blast, which occurred near the Red Fort, killed 13 people and injured 20 others. The impact was so severe that several nearby vehicles were damaged.
NIA arrests three from Haryana
The National Investigation Agency has detained three individuals connected to the incident. During interrogation, officials discovered that the accused were communicating through an unconventional and covert method known as the “email-draft” technique.
Instead of sending emails, they typed messages, uploaded images and videos into the drafts folder of a shared email account, allowing the other conspirators to read the content without transmitting data over the network. This method was reportedly used to avoid surveillance and prevent the communication trail from being tracked easily.
The accused — Dr. Umar Nabi, Dr. Muzammil Gani and Dr. Shaheen Shahid from Al-Falah University — all operated through the same email account. Along with the draft-email method, they also exchanged images, maps and location details using “Threema”, an encrypted instant messaging app, making it difficult for security agencies to trace their communications, officials said.
