New Delhi: A 29-year-old cab driver has been arrested for allegedly abducting, sexually assaulting and murdering an 11-year-old girl who was sleeping beside her parents on a footpath in South Delhi, police said.
According to investigators, the incident took place in the early hours of June 22 near Chhatarpur Metro Station in Mehrauli, where the victim was sleeping with her parents, who work as daily wage labourers. Police said the accused allegedly took the girl to a secluded area near the Faridabad–Gurugram border.
Authorities allege that the child was sexually assaulted before being killed. Investigators also said the suspect attempted to conceal the body by covering it with stones in an effort to destroy evidence.
The girl’s father reportedly woke up shortly after the alleged abduction, noticed a vehicle leaving the area and discovered that his daughter was missing. He contacted Mehrauli Police Station at around 4:58 a.m., prompting an immediate search operation.
Police reviewed footage from nearly 200 CCTV cameras and used technical and intelligence inputs to identify and trace the suspect. The accused was arrested in Vikaspuri, West Delhi, within six hours of the complaint, officials said.
Investigators later recovered the victim’s body after taking the accused to the alleged crime scene. Forensic experts collected evidence from both the vehicle and the location as part of the ongoing investigation.
Following the post-mortem examination, the victim’s body was handed over to her family. Her funeral was held in Chhatarpur. The grieving family has demanded the death penalty for the accused.
Police have registered a case under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to kidnapping, sexual assault and murder. According to police, the accused has a criminal record in Bihar, including two attempted murder cases among five previous criminal cases.
The investigation is ongoing.
