Ban imposed on Maharashtra’s Kadasiddeshwar Swamiji from entering Vijayapura for two months
Vijayapura: Deputy commissioner Dr. Anand K. has issued an order banning the entry of Maharashtra’s Kolhapur-Kaneri Mutt seer, Kadasiddeshwar Swamiji, into Vijayapura district from October 16 to December 16, citing possible disturbance to public peace and order.
The move comes after Swamiji’s controversial remarks at a recent event in Beelur, Jath taluk of Maharashtra, where he allegedly made derogatory comments about Lingayat seers and the Basava Samskruti Utsava, calling it a “drama troupe blessed by the Chief Minister.” He went further, reportedly saying that people should “not worship gods in temples, throw idols into rivers, drink liquor, eat meat, and enjoy.” The seer also used offensive language towards other religious figures, sparking widespread outrage.
Following the remarks, Lingayat seers, devotees, and Basava followers across Karnataka, including Vijayapura, launched massive protests, burning effigies and demanding action against Swamiji for insulting religious sentiments. The protests intensified, prompting the police to issue a security alert ahead of Swamiji’s proposed visit to Basavana Bagewadi on October 16 and 17.
The Superintendent of Police submitted a report to the district administration warning that Swamiji’s entry could trigger law and order issues and disturb communal harmony. Acting on this, the district collector imposed the two-month entry ban under preventive measures to maintain peace.
The order stated that Swamiji “shall not enter or participate in any public program within Vijayapura district limits” until further notice. Authorities have also cautioned that any attempt to violate the directive will result in strict legal action.
Meanwhile, several Lingayat organizations have welcomed the decision, calling it “necessary to uphold social harmony.” However, some of Swamiji’s followers in Maharashtra have criticized the move as “politically motivated.” The administration has reinforced security in sensitive areas of Vijayapura to prevent any untoward incident.
