Chikkamagaluru: Wild elephant that killed two in Sringeri captured
Chikkamagaluru: The forest department has successfully captured the wild elephant that had claimed two lives in Sringeri taluk. The operation was carried out on Sunday night in the Bhagavathi forest area, around 8 p.m., with the help of trained elephants from nearby camps.
The captured tusker had created panic in the region after it killed two residents of Keremane village a few days ago. The victims were reportedly attacked while collecting fodder from the forest. Following the tragic incident, the forest department had issued orders to capture the rogue elephant.
Trained elephants brought in from the Dubare and Harangi camps were deployed for the task. Under the leadership of Ekalavya, a well-trained kumki elephant, the operation began around 5 p.m. and concluded successfully by 8 p.m.
Officials said the elephant will be shifted to a safe location for observation and further decisions will be taken as per standard wildlife management procedures.
The capture operation brought much-needed relief to villagers in Sringeri taluk, who had been living in fear for several days due to the elephant menace.
