Food officials seized chemicals and ingredients
Police are searching for the suspected operators
A suspected network involved in making and selling fake country ghee has been uncovered in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, after food department officials raided an abandoned house in the city.
The operation came to light following information about suspected adulterated ghee being prepared at a vacant property on Market Road. Officials, accompanied by police personnel, reportedly reached the location and found the house locked.
After opening the premises, the team allegedly discovered large quantities of materials including dalda, vanaspati, palm oil and bottles containing various chemicals. The findings have raised concerns over the nature of the products being prepared and sold in the name of traditional country ghee.
The suspected operators were not present when officials arrived and reportedly managed to escape before the raid. Police have now begun efforts to trace those believed to be involved in the operation.
According to the preliminary investigation, the people allegedly running the unit were originally from Ballari and were not local residents of Chikkamagaluru. Officials also suspect that the group had been involved in similar activities for several years.
The alleged adulterated ghee was reportedly being supplied beyond the city, including to rural areas. The discovery has caused concern because country ghee is commonly purchased by families for cooking and traditional food preparations.
Officials are now examining the seized materials and other evidence to determine how the alleged products were manufactured, where they were distributed and how long the operation had been running.
The investigation is expected to provide more details once the suspected operators are located and questioned. Authorities are also likely to examine the supply chain to identify shops or other channels through which the alleged adulterated product reached consumers.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for consumers to be cautious when purchasing food products sold as traditional or premium items. Food safety officials are continuing their investigation into the alleged adulteration network.
