BISFF 2026 opens submissions, offers free entry for Karnataka filmmakers

Film festivals continue to serve as a vital launchpad for aspiring filmmakers, offering visibility, credibility and networking opportunities. For many directors, short films mark the first step into cinema, and short film festivals play a crucial role in nurturing new talent.

One such prominent platform is the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF), which has now opened submissions for its 2026 edition. The organisers of BISFF announced that the submission process for short films will begin from February 1.

Widely regarded as one of India’s most prestigious short film festivals, BISFF holds the distinction of being the country’s only Oscar Academy–qualifying short film festival, adding significant global recognition for selected films.

A major highlight of the 2026 edition is the special provision for filmmakers from Karnataka. In a move aimed at encouraging local talent, BISFF has announced free entry for short films submitted under the ‘Karnataka Competition’ category.

This initiative is expected to benefit emerging filmmakers working in Kannada and other regional languages of the state. According to the official press release, filmmakers can submit their entries free of cost for the Karnataka category until February 28.

From March 1 onwards, a regular submission fee will be applicable. The final deadline for submissions across categories has been set as April 30. The festival organisers emphasised that the initiative aligns with BISFF’s long-standing objective of promoting regional cinema and providing a global platform for grassroots storytelling.

Over the years, several short films premiered at BISFF have gone on to gain international recognition and awards. The eligibility criteria for submissions have also been clearly outlined. Short films must be made in Kannada or any other regional language of Karnataka.

The runtime of the film should not exceed 30 minutes. Only films produced on or after January 1, 2024, will be considered eligible. Additionally, all entries must carry English subtitles.

Interested filmmakers can find detailed guidelines and complete the registration process through the official website, www.bisff.in. Queries can also be addressed via email at bisffblr@gmail.com.

With its Oscar-qualifying status and focus on regional talent, BISFF 2026 is expected to attract a diverse range of creative voices, reaffirming Bengaluru’s position as a major hub for independent and short-format cinema in India.
