Karnataka Braces for Heavy Rain as Seven Districts Stay on Alert
Monsoon activity has intensified across Karnataka with heavy rainfall expected in several coastal and Malnad districts while Bengaluru and many interior regions are also likely to receive showers.
Monsoon rains have once again gathered strength across Karnataka, prompting weather officials to issue fresh warnings for several districts. Coastal and Malnad regions are expected to receive intense rainfall over the next couple of days, while many other parts of the state, including Bengaluru, are also likely to witness moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging, flooding, and strong winds.
According to the latest weather forecast, seven districts have been placed under a Yellow Alert due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and nearby rain prone regions are expected to experience widespread showers. Weather experts believe that the current spell of rain may continue through the following day, keeping conditions wet across much of the state.
The forecast indicates that the coastal districts are likely to receive the heaviest rainfall. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada may witness intense rain accompanied by wind speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour. Such weather conditions could affect normal traffic movement, fishing activities, and outdoor work. Residents living in low lying areas have been advised to stay alert as water accumulation can increase quickly during continuous rainfall.
The Malnad belt is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu could receive heavy showers at isolated locations. These hilly regions generally experience strong rainfall during the southwest monsoon, increasing the chances of overflowing streams, slippery roads, and temporary disruptions in transportation. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to respond if required.
Northern interior Karnataka is likely to witness a mixed weather pattern. Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, and Koppal are expected to receive moderate rainfall along with strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour in some places. Meanwhile, Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir are forecast to receive light showers. Although rainfall intensity may remain lower than the coastal districts, changing weather conditions could still affect travel and agricultural activities.
Bengaluru and its surrounding districts are also expected to remain under cloudy skies with intermittent rain. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Davanagere, Hassan, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Tumakuru may receive moderate rainfall along with gusty winds. Weather experts say commuters should plan their travel carefully as sudden showers during peak traffic hours could lead to congestion on major roads across the city.
In Ballari, Chitradurga, and Vijayanagara districts, only light rainfall is expected. However, officials continue to advise residents to monitor weather updates because rainfall patterns can change rapidly during the active monsoon season. Farmers, transport operators, and people travelling long distances have also been asked to remain informed about the latest forecasts before making plans.
The rainfall recorded over the previous twenty four hours clearly reflects the intensity of the ongoing monsoon. Agumbe in Shivamogga district recorded approximately 16 centimetres of rain, making it one of the wettest locations in the state. Kundapura in Udupi district received around 15 centimetres, while Mangaluru registered nearly 14 centimetres. Siddapura in Udupi district also recorded about 14 centimetres of rainfall, highlighting the widespread impact across coastal Karnataka.
Several other locations reported significant rainfall as well. Gerusoppa in Uttara Kannada and Shakti Nagar in Dakshina Kannada each received close to 13 centimetres of rain. Kollur in Udupi district and Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada recorded around 11 centimetres, while Bantwal registered nearly 10 centimetres. These figures indicate that the coastal belt continues to receive sustained rainfall as the southwest monsoon remains active.
Heavy showers were not limited to coastal regions alone. Karkala in Udupi district, Puttur, Mani, and Moodabidri in Dakshina Kannada, along with Jagalabet in Uttara Kannada, each recorded around 9 centimetres of rainfall. Interestingly, Manvi in Raichur district also received nearly 9 centimetres, showing that rain bearing systems are influencing several parts of Karnataka beyond the traditional high rainfall zones.
Disaster management authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and strong winds. Motorists should drive carefully on slippery roads, while residents near rivers, streams, and landslide prone areas should remain alert. Fishermen have also been advised to monitor official advisories before venturing into the sea, as rough weather conditions may develop quickly along the Karnataka coast.
With forecasts indicating that the monsoon will remain active over the next few days, officials are continuing to monitor the situation across the state. Emergency teams are prepared to respond wherever necessary, while citizens are encouraged to follow official weather bulletins and take basic precautions. As Karnataka experiences another strong spell of monsoon rain, preparedness and timely information will play a key role in ensuring public safety.
