Unit Test: Education department implemented new scheme to all schools
Unit Test: The Karnataka Department of School Education and Literacy has indeed been implementing and proposing new assessment schemes, including a focus on unit tests in government schools.
From July 2025 onwards, the Karnataka education department is rolling out a new assessment method where students in state syllabus schools will be tested after every chapter (lesson-based assessment) is completed. This is a significant shift from the earlier practice of only having two formative and two summative assessments in an academic year.

The primary objective of these short, frequent tests is to assess students’ understanding of the lesson immediately after it’s taught. This helps teachers identify learning gaps promptly and clarify doubts, or even revisit the portion if there’s a lack of clarity among students.
These tests are expected to be short quizzes, mostly in a multiple-choice question (MCQ) format, potentially conducted on OMR sheets or an equivalent digital system for easy evaluation.
This new system is reportedly applicable for all classes from Grade 1 to Grade 10. The marks from these unit tests will be primarily for measuring learning outcomes and not for promotion purposes. This aims to reduce stress on students and teachers while still providing valuable feedback.
The department is customizing the Union Ministry of School Education’s mobile app, Vidya Samiksha Kendra, for this purpose, indicating a move towards digital evaluation.
Why this change?
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Karnataka government to improve learning outcomes and, consequently, boost the SSLC (Class 10) results in the state, which saw a relatively low pass percentage last year. The department found that a lack of continuous assessment made it difficult to track student understanding effectively.

The proposal for these lesson-based assessments (unit tests) was discussed and planned, with an aim for implementation starting July 2025. This aligns with the new academic year’s focused approach to improving foundational learning.
A new unit test scheme (lesson-based assessment) has been planned and is likely starting in Karnataka government schools from July 2025 to improve continuous learning assessment.
