Cyclone Ditwah: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall alert, school holiday on December 3.

Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a Deep Depression and is currently stalled very close to the North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast east-southeast of Chennai.

The system’s slow movement has caused persistent and intense rainfall. Several parts of North Chennai recorded extremely heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, with areas like Ennore and Parrys topping the charts with over 25 cm}.

Impact on Chennai:

Severe waterlogging and flooding are reported across low-lying areas, main roads, and neighbourhoods like Koyambedu, Nerkundram, Perambur, and Vyasarpadi. Traffic movement has been heavily disrupted.

Safety Measures:

Schools and Colleges remain closed in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts today (December 2, 2025).

Air Travel: Flights at Chennai Airport have faced cancellations and disruptions.

The depression is expected to continue moving slowly southwestwards toward the coast and is likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Tuesday night, but heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until at least the end of Tuesday.

As of the evening of Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the District Collectors of the following districts have officially declared a holiday for Schools and Colleges for Wednesday, December 3, 2025, due to the continuing impact of the deep depression (remnant of Cyclone Ditwah) and the forecast for heavy rainfall:

School and college holiday announced in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram on December 3. The IMD forecasts that while the deep depression is expected to weaken further, heavy to very heavy rainfall is still likely in isolated pockets of North Tamil Nadu, including these four districts, until tomorrow morning.

Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow advisories from district administrations.
