Two accused arrested for assaulting woman with machete and chain snatching

Chain snatching: The Girinagar Police have arrested two habitual offenders Yogananda (35) and his associate Praveen for attacking two women with a machete and snatching gold chains while they were returning home after attending a Ganesh festival orchestra. Police have recovered 80 grams of stolen gold ornaments from the duo.

According to Bengaluru South Division DCP Lokesh B. Jagalasar, the incident occurred on September 13 when Usha and her friend Varalakshmi were walking home after the event. The accused, who arrived on a Pulsar bike, threatened them with a machete.

While Usha handed over her chain out of fear, Varalakshmi resisted, prompting the attackers to slash her hand, severing part of her finger. The same night, the accused also committed chain snatching in the Kumaraswamy Layout and Konanakunte police limits.

Acting on technical evidence, the police arrested the duo and produced them before court, which remanded them to judicial custody. Investigations revealed that Yogananda, a resident of Gollarahalli and native of Marasingahalli in Maddur, has been involved in over 25 cases of murder, robbery, and chain snatching since 2010.

He was released on bail three months ago and soon resumed criminal activities. Police said the accused spent the proceeds from the stolen jewelry on leisure trips to Goa and Puducherry before returning to Bengaluru, where they were apprehended.

DCP Lokesh Jagalasar confirmed that a case has been registered under the Karnataka Control of Organized Crimes Act (KCOCA) against the main accused for repeated organized criminal activity.
