Afghanistan-Pakistan Conflict: Airstrike Kills Three Afghan Cricketers; ACB Withdraws from Upcoming Series in Protest

Afghanistan-Pakistan Conflict: Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated into a near-war scenario following a deadly airstrike by Pakistan that reportedly targeted Afghan civilians.

Among the casualties were three young Afghan cricketers—Sibghatullah, Haroon, and Kabeer—who were en route to participate in a goodwill match near the border region.

The players were traveling from Urgun in Paktika province to Sharana when the airstrike occurred. Initial reports confirm that several others were injured in the attack. The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Afghanistan’s sporting community, with cricketers and fans expressing grief and anger on social media.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) condemned the attack, calling it a devastating blow to the nation’s cricketing fraternity. In a statement, the board expressed condolences to the bereaved families and announced a boycott of the upcoming tri-nation series as a mark of respect and protest.

International cricketer Fazalhaq Farooqi described the killings as a “heinous and unforgivable crime,” emphasizing that the victims were innocent civilians and national athletes. Fellow player Mohammad Nabi echoed the sentiment, stating that the tragedy affects not just Paktika but the entire Afghan cricket family and nation.

The incident has intensified diplomatic tensions, with Kabul vowing retaliation and demanding accountability. The ACB’s decision mirrors India’s past stance on cross-border aggression, signaling a firm and symbolic response from the sports community.

Further developments are expected as the situation unfolds and international bodies weigh in on the escalating conflict.
