Teen lovers die by suicide in separate incidents in Bagalkote district

Bagalkote : In a heartbreaking incident, two teenage lovers died by suicide in separate locations in Bagalkote district of Karnataka, highlighting concerns over emotional distress and lack of counselling support among youth.

The deceased have been identified as Pavithra Onti (19), a resident of KHD Colony in Banahatti, and Karthik Nayak (19), a youth  from Aski village near Rabkavi Banhatti. According to police sources, the couple had been in a relationship for some time and were reportedly facing personal issues.

Officials said the incident unfolded on Tuesday after an argument broke out between the two. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the couple had a disagreement, following which the girl returned home in distress,” a police officer stated.

Unable to cope with the emotional turmoil, Pavithra allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Banahatti by hanging herself. Family members, who discovered her, immediately alerted the police. A case was registered, and further procedures were initiated.

The tragedy deepened shortly after, when Karthik came to know about Pavithra’s death. Shocked and devastated by the news, he too allegedly took the extreme step and died by suicide at his village in Aski. “The boy appears to have been deeply affected after learning about the girl’s death. He took the extreme decision within a short span of time,” another officer said.

Police from Banahatti station visited both locations, conducted spot inspections, and have begun an investigation into the circumstances leading to the dual tragedy. Bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and statements from family members and friends are being recorded.

Locals described the incident as deeply disturbing. “They were very young. Such incidents show how emotional distress can spiral quickly without support,” a resident said.

Experts point out that such cases underline the urgent need for mental health awareness and counselling, especially among adolescents and young adults dealing with relationship stress and personal conflicts.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to maintain open communication with children and watch for signs of distress. “Timely intervention and emotional support can prevent such irreversible tragedies,” officials emphasized.

The incident has left both villages in mourning, raising serious concerns about the mental well-being of youth and the importance of support systems during difficult times.
