Mumbai police rescue 19 hostages, including 17 children, after dramatic standoff; suspect shot dead

Mumbai : In a shocking hostage situation in Powai, Mumbai Police rescued 19 people — including 17 children — who were held captive inside a studio on Thursday. The prime suspect, identified as Rohit Arya, was shot dead during a police operation after he allegedly opened fire on officers.

According to police sources, Arya had lured the children to the Mahavir Classic building studio under the pretext of conducting acting classes and auditions. Once inside, he locked them up along with two adults and refused to let them leave.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary confirmed that all the children are safe. “The operation was delicate since children were involved. Our team acted swiftly and rescued everyone without harm,” he said.

Arya reportedly held the hostages for over two hours before police stormed the premises. During the encounter, he attempted to shoot at officers using an air gun, prompting a retaliatory shot from the police that hit him in the chest, leading to his death.

Police seized the air gun, chemicals, and other materials from the scene.

Before the police intervention, Arya had released a video on social media stating that he wanted to “speak to certain people and ask questions,” claiming he had no demand for money. He had threatened to set the studio on fire if his demands were ignored.

Preliminary investigations suggest Arya had previously been involved in a government project, but after not receiving payment, he allegedly staged the hostage drama to gain attention. Police are verifying his background and investigating whether others assisted him.

The rescued children have been handed over to their parents after medical examination, and the Powai Police have registered a case. Further investigation is underway.
