ITR Filing Last Date Extended: know the new deadline
ITR Filing Last Date extended: The last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 (Financial Year 2024-25) has been changed for a significant category of taxpayers.
New Deadline:
For Individual/HUF/AOP/BOI (whose accounts are NOT required to be audited): The original due date of July 31, 2025, has been extended to September 15, 2025.

Why the change?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the deadline due to several reasons:
Extensive Changes in Notified ITR Forms: The ITR forms for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance and enhancing transparency. These changes required additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities by the Income Tax Department.
Credits arising from TDS statements (like Form 26AS), which are due for filing by May 31, 2025, were expected to begin reflecting in early June. This limited the effective window for taxpayers to accurately reconcile their income and tax credits.
Other Important Due Dates for AY 2025-26:
The last date to file ITR remains October 31, 2025. (They typically need to submit their audit report by September 30, 2025). The last date to file ITR remains November 30, 2025. (They typically need to submit the audit report by October 31, 2025).

If you miss the extended due dates, you can still file a belated ITR by December 31, 2025, though this will attract late filing fees and interest on outstanding taxes. The last date to file a revised ITR (to correct mistakes in an already filed return) is also December 31, 2025.
As per the Finance Act, 2025, taxpayers can file an updated return up to 48 months (4 years) from the end of the relevant Assessment Year (i.e., until March 31, 2030 for AY 2025-26), but this comes with a higher additional tax liability.
This extension provides a welcome relief for many taxpayers, giving them more time to gather documents, ensure accuracy, and comply with the new ITR forms.
