Aadhaar Card no longer accepted as proof of birth: Govt new order

Aadhaar Card: Both the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra state governments have recently issued new directives stating that the Aadhaar card will no longer be accepted as a valid birth certificate or as standalone proof of date of birth (DoB) for official processes.

This decision is based on the clarification that the Aadhaar card is primarily a proof of identity and does not contain the official birth record or verification that a government-issued birth certificate does.

Key Points of the New Orders:

1. Uttar Pradesh (UP):

The Planning Department has issued instructions to all government departments to stop accepting Aadhaar as proof of DoB.

The order emphasizes that since the Aadhaar card does not have an attached birth record, it cannot legally serve as a birth certificate.

This is intended to ensure proper documentation in processes like school admissions and employment where age is a critical criterion.

2. Maharashtra:

The Revenue Department has stated that the Aadhaar card will not be considered a valid document, particularly for issuing delayed birth certificates. The government has ordered the cancellation of any birth certificates that were issued solely based on Aadhaar after the implementation of the Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Act, 2023.

A new 16-point verification guideline has been introduced for birth-related documents to prevent the fraudulent acquisition of certificates.

What Documents Should Be Used Instead?

The states have mandated that individuals must provide official, valid documents for proof of date of birth, such as:

Official Birth Certificate (issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969).

High School Marksheet/Certificate (containing the date of birth).

Passport.

This move is largely aimed at preventing the misuse and fraudulent creation of fake certificates and ensuring more reliable documentation for state records.
