Aadhaar Card: How to close Deceased Person Aadhaar, Know step by step guide

Aadhaar Card: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has recently introduced an online service to make it easier for family members to report the death of an Aadhaar holder and request deactivation. This process is essential to prevent potential identity fraud and misuse of welfare benefits.

Here is the step-by-step process for reporting the death of a family member for Aadhaar deactivation:

The primary method now available is through the official myAadhaar Portal.

Phase 1: Preparation (Documents Required)

Before starting the online process, ensure you have the following ready:

1. Aadhaar Number of the deceased person.

2. Death Registration Number of the official Death Certificate.

3. Demographic Details of the deceased person (Name, Date of Birth, etc.).

4. Your own Aadhaar Number (as the reporting family member) for authentication.

Phase 2: Online Reporting on myAadhaar Portal

1. Visit the myAadhaar Portal: Go to the official UIDAI myAadhaar portal.

2. Log In: The family member reporting the death must log in with their own Aadhaar number and the associated OTP (One-Time Password).

3. Access the Service: Look for the service titled “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” or a similar option.

4. Enter Deceased Person’s Details:

Enter the Aadhaar Number of the deceased person.

Provide the Death Registration Number from the official Death Certificate.

Fill in the necessary demographic details (Name, Date of Birth, etc.) of the deceased person.

5. Submit Request: Follow the on-screen instructions and submit the deactivation request.

Phase 3: Validation and Deactivation

The UIDAI will initiate a validation process by cross-checking the submitted Death Registration Number and other details with the Civil Registration System (CRS) data of the concerned State/UT.

After due verification and successful validation, the UIDAI will take action to deactivate the Aadhaar number of the deceased person.

Once deactivated, the Aadhaar number can no longer be used for any transaction or authentication.

Important Points to Note:

Deactivation, Not Cancellation: The Aadhaar number is deactivated, meaning it is marked as inactive and cannot be used, but the number is never re-assigned to another individual.

Availability: The “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” facility is currently available in a growing number of States and Union Territories that are integrated with the Civil Registration System (CRS).

Prevention of Misuse: Deactivation is crucial to prevent the misuse of the Aadhaar number for fraudulent financial transactions or the unauthorised availing of government welfare benefits.

Check Aadhaar Status: Legal heirs can check if the Aadhaar number is active/deactivated on the myAadhaar portal by using the “Check Aadhaar Status” service. If it is deactivated due to death, the system will show an inactive status.
