Thiruvananthapuram, : In a shocking incident reported from Kerala, the convoy of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was allegedly blocked and his security personnel assaulted during an election campaign visit in Malappuram district.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday when Tharoor was travelling to Vandoor to participate in a campaign programme ahead of the upcoming elections. His convoy was reportedly intercepted near the Chellithodu bridge in Tiruvalli, leading to a heated argument between the groups involved. The situation escalated, and unidentified individuals allegedly attacked members of his security team.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media platform X, showing the tense exchange and aftermath of the confrontation. Based on a complaint filed by the security personnel, the Vandoor police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Police officials confirmed that three accused persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, and two vehicles used during the act have been seized. A non-bailable case has also been registered against one of the key accuseds, identified as Ummar, a resident of Kalikavu.
The incident comes at a crucial time, as Kerala is set to go to polls in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The episode has raised concerns over the safety of political leaders and the law-and-order situation during the election period.
Reacting to the incident, Tharoor took to X and reassured his supporters that he was safe. He expressed gratitude for the concern shown by well-wishers and clarified that he was not personally attacked. “I am touched by the messages and calls expressing concern over the unpleasant incident involving my security staff. They are doing fine, and I was not assaulted in any way,” he posted.
Despite the disruption, Tharoor continued with his campaign schedule and successfully completed two more planned events later in the day. He stated that the incident did not deter him and that his campaign activities proceeded as planned.
The police have intensified security arrangements in the region to prevent any further untoward incidents as election activities gather pace.
