BAMS student dies by suicide in Chitradurga; harassment over alleged relationship surfaces

Chitradurga : A shocking incident has been reported from Holalkere town in Chitradurga district, where a 23-year-old student allegedly died by suicide after being subjected to harassment and character assassination over a rumoured relationship with a professor.

The deceased, identified as Likhitha, was a BAMS student at an Ayurveda college in Malladihalli. According to preliminary information, she was found hanging at her residence in Basava Layout in Holalkere.

Family sources and police said the student had been deeply distressed over rumours linking her to a faculty member, identified as Dr. Raju. The alleged misinformation and constant harassment reportedly took a toll on her mental health, ultimately leading to the tragic decision.“She was unable to cope with the humiliation caused by the false allegations. It severely affected her emotionally,” a source close to the family said.

A death note reportedly recovered from the scene has added a serious dimension to the case. In the note, Likhitha is said to have named Dr. Raju, his wife Nisha, and a few fellow students, holding them responsible for her extreme step.“She has clearly mentioned that harassment and false rumours about her character pushed her to take this decision,” a police official said.

Following the incident, a case has been registered at the Holalkere Police Station. Police have filed an FIR against the professor, his wife, and others named in the death note under relevant sections related to abetment to suicide and harassment. “We are investigating all angles, including the authenticity of the death note and the nature of the allegations mentioned in it,” the officer added.

The incident has sparked concern over the increasing instances of harassment and character assassination in educational institutions. Experts point out that the misuse of rumours and social stigma can have devastating psychological effects on students. “This is a tragic reminder of how unchecked gossip and harassment can destroy lives. Institutions must ensure safe environments and address such issues promptly,” an academic expert said.

The case has also raised questions about the responsibility of colleges in preventing such incidents and providing adequate counselling support to students facing distress.Police said further  action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. The body has been sent for postmortem examination, and statements from family members and college authorities are being recorded.

The tragic death of the young student has left the local community in shock, with calls for strict action against those responsible.
