Debt distress turns fatal: Two dead, two critical in Anekal family tragedy

Bengaluru,  : A shocking incident linked to mounting debt has claimed two lives and left two others critically injured in Mallenahalli village of Anekal taluk on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Police said a 27-year-old man allegedly attacked his family members before attempting suicide.

The deceased have been identified as Asha (55) and her daughter Varshitha (34), who died on the spot. The accused, Mohan Gowda (27), and his nephew Mayank (11) are currently battling for their lives in a hospital.

According to preliminary investigation, Mohan Gowda was under severe financial stress due to mounting debts. On Saturday night, he reportedly recorded a video stating his intention to end his life and shared it with relatives. Alarmed by the message, family members rushed to the house, only to find the door locked from inside.

When they broke open the door, they discovered a horrifying scene. Asha and Varshitha were found dead, while Mohan and the young boy were lying in a pool of blood. Both were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Police officials, including the Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police, visited the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection. A case has been registered at the Attibele Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Initial findings suggest that Mohan Gowda had borrowed money through informal channels, including chit fund transactions, and had been struggling to repay the loans. Investigators believe that financial pressure, combined with lifestyle expenses, may have pushed him to take the extreme step.

Police suspect that he attacked his mother, sister, and nephew before attempting to take his own life. However, officials said the exact sequence of events will be confirmed after detailed investigation and statements from the injured, if they recover.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about the growing impact of financial stress and unregulated lending practices. Authorities have urged people facing financial distress to seek legal and counselling support rather than resorting to extreme actions.
