Dinner politics intensifies in Karnataka Congress as Siddaramaiah hosts ministers on March 16

Bengaluru : Political activity within the Indian National Congress in Karnataka has intensified with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah planning a dinner meeting for cabinet ministers on March 16. The development has sparked fresh discussions in political circles, especially coming soon after a similar gathering hosted by Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar.

The dinner meeting will be held at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Kaveri, in Bengaluru. The event comes at a time when the state legislature session is underway and internal political activity within the ruling party appears to be gathering momentum.

Sources in the party say the dinner is likely to serve as an informal platform for ministers to discuss several key political issues and strategies. The move has attracted attention as it follows a dinner gathering recently organised by D.K. Shivakumar to mark six years of his tenure as president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Soon after Shivakumar’s event, a group of legislators believed to be aligned with different factions within the party reportedly held separate meetings on March 12. These developments have triggered speculation about internal political manoeuvring within the Congress.

Political observers say the latest dinner meeting hosted by Siddaramaiah could help the leadership maintain coordination within the cabinet and address emerging political issues. The gathering is expected to focus on a range of topics, including preparations for upcoming local body elections and organisational matters within the party.

Sources also suggest that discussions may include strategy for forthcoming elections in several states where Congress plans to intensify its campaign efforts. Party leaders may deliberate on which senior leaders and ministers will be deployed for campaign activities outside Karnataka.

Another issue likely to come up during the meeting is the ongoing debate surrounding internal reservation policies and other governance-related matters that have drawn political attention in the state.

Meanwhile, the sequence of dinner meetings has triggered talk of “dinner politics” within the Karnataka Congress, with analysts suggesting that such informal gatherings often serve as opportunities for political coordination, negotiation and strengthening internal unity.

Though party leaders have described the meetings as routine interactions among colleagues, the timing has drawn interest because it comes amid speculation about cabinet expansion and the aspirations of several legislators seeking ministerial positions.

For now, Congress leaders maintain that the dinner hosted by Siddaramaiah is simply meant to foster discussion and coordination among ministers during the ongoing legislative session. However, political watchers believe the gathering could play a significant role in shaping internal equations within the ruling party.

With the state Congress leadership facing multiple political and organisational challenges, the upcoming dinner meeting is expected to be closely watched for signals about the party’s future strategy and internal dynamics.
