Negligence by pet owner under scanner after dog attack in HSR Layout

Bengaluru: A violent pet dog attack on a woman in HSR Layout has sparked outrage and renewed debate over the safety of pedestrians and the responsibilities of pet owners in Bengaluru. The woman, who was out for her regular morning walk, suffered grievous injuries after being mauled by a pet dog and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The incident occurred on January 26 in Teachers Colony, HSR Layout, at around 6.54 am. According to police sources, the woman was walking close to her residence when a pet dog from a neighbouring house suddenly charged at her. The animal reportedly clamped onto her neck, causing her to collapse on the road.
Residents in the vicinity said the situation turned chaotic as the dog continued its attack. A man who attempted to intervene was also attacked by the dog, forcing others to step in. After several minutes of struggle, the dog was finally restrained. By then, the woman had sustained deep bite wounds on her face, neck, hands and legs.
Medical sources confirmed that the woman required extensive treatment, including over 50 stitches, particularly around the face and neck region. While her injuries are serious, doctors have stated that she narrowly escaped a fatal outcome.
The dog is owned by Amaresh Reddy, a resident of the area. Police said preliminary findings indicate that the dog was allowed to roam without proper restraint or supervision. The victimβs husband has lodged a formal complaint with the HSR Layout police, holding the dog owner responsible for negligence and endangering public safety.
Following the complaint, police have registered a case and begun a detailed investigation. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby houses to reconstruct the sequence of events. They are also examining whether the dog owner complied with existing rules related to leashing, vaccination and registration of pet animals.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, with residents expressing fear and anger. Many have pointed out that unrestrained pets pose a serious risk, especially to senior citizens, children and morning walkers. Calls are growing for stricter monitoring of pet ownership and harsher penalties for negligence.
Authorities have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for responsible pet management in densely populated urban areas.
