Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has renamed the long-delayed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR-1) project as the Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) and set a target to complete it within the next two years. The road width, initially planned at 100 metres, will now be limited to 65 metres, including service roads and a metro corridor.
Originally announced in 2007, the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) had notified the acquisition of land for a 73-km-long, 100-metre-wide expressway. However, the revised plan aims for a more compact yet efficient design modeled after the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway. The main carriageway will be a toll road, flanked by service roads on both sides.
Each side of the corridor will feature 9-metre-wide service roads and 3-metre-wide pedestrian paths to connect nearby villages and farmlands affected by acquisition. Additionally, a 5-metre space has been reserved along the service road for a metro or elevated rail line in the future.
The design also includes 4-metre shoulders and fencing on both sides for safety and structural stability. The downsizing of the project will save around 35 metres of land, which the government plans to return to farmers as compensation. Officials said this approach balances infrastructure growth with farmer welfare.
To fund the project, a 1% cess will be imposed on stamp duty and registration fees for all land transactions within a 1-km radius of the BBC corridor. The amount collected will go to the state’s consolidated fund and later be transferred to the BDA for project execution.
BBC Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) chairman L.K. Atheek clarified that the acquired land will not be used for real estate purposes and urged farmers not to believe in rumors regarding misuse of project land.
The 117-km Bengaluru Business Corridor will loop around the city, connecting Tumakuru Road, Yelahanka, Whitefield, Anekal, Electronic City, and Mysuru Road, finally linking back to the BIEC junction near Tumakuru Road. The corridor will serve as a major bypass route for heavy traffic moving from Electronic City to Tumakuru, Nelamangala, and Mysuru Road.
