Davanagere : Amid rising talk of a possible “November revolution” within the ruling Congress in Karnataka, party workers in Davanagere have urged the high command to appoint minister SS Mallikarjun as the state’s deputy chief minister.
The demand has gained traction among Mallikarjun’s supporters, who argue that his elevation would ensure fair representation for the Lingayat community within the Siddaramaiah-led Cabinet. With 36 Lingayat MLAs currently representing the Congress, party cadres said Mallikarjun — known for his administrative experience and clean record — deserves the key post.
A senior leader and three-time minister, SS Mallikarjun has served under different Congress governments. During SM Krishna’s tenure, he was the Minister for Youth Services and Sports; later, under Siddaramaiah’s first term, he handled the Horticulture and APMC portfolios. At present, he manages the Mines and Geology department.
Veteran Congress leader Veerabhadrappa backed the local demand, praising Mallikarjun’s commitment to public service. “He works tirelessly from morning till night, listens to people’s grievances, and ensures they are resolved. He deserves to be made deputy chief minister,” Veerabhadrappa said.
Reacting to the calls, Mallikarjun maintained a modest tone and clarified he was not seeking any promotion. “Everyone has aspirations, but not all can be fulfilled. The high command will decide. Even if they offer it, I don’t want the post,” he stated.
He also dismissed speculation of a political shake-up. “There is no November revolution. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will complete his full five-year term. Everything will be fine,” he said.
However, local party workers insist their demand is genuine and not politically motivated. “No matter who becomes CM or PM, our Mallikarjun should be deputy CM,” they declared, reflecting growing grassroots support for the veteran minister in central Karnataka.
