IMD issued very heavy rain alert for next 24 hours in this coastal district
IMD: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Kannada has issued a strong appeal for precautionary measures due to the forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the district over the next 24 hours and beyond.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red and Orange alerts for Coastal Karnataka, which includes Uttara Kannada, indicating a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Specifically, IMD’s warnings for Coastal Karnataka on July 19, 2025, and extending to July 22, 2025, show “Very Heavy Rain.”

Uttara Kannada, particularly its coastal taluks like Karwar, Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, and Ankola, has been experiencing relentless heavy downpours, leading to disruptions in normal life, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and inundation of homes.
Precautionary Measures Appeals by DC:
The DC has consistently urged citizens to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety. This includes staying indoors unless absolutely necessary. Avoiding travel to landslide-prone areas and stretches of National Highways that are vulnerable.
The DC had previously banned vehicle parking along vulnerable stretches of National Highways during the monsoon. Monitoring water levels in rivers and drains, especially for those living in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
Uttara Kannada has identified landslide-prone zones, and residents in such areas are advised to be extra vigilant. Control rooms have been set up at taluk levels and urban local bodies, operating round the clock, for immediate assistance during emergencies.

School Holidays: Due to the heavy rainfall, there have been frequent school holidays declared in various taluks of Uttara Kannada to ensure the safety of students. It’s advisable for parents and students to check official notifications from the local administration regarding school closures.
Power outages: Residents should be prepared for potential power disruptions and keep essential devices charged.
