Karnataka heavy rainfall alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for the three coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada on Tuesday, stating that there is a possibility of heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) with thunderstorms, the Meteorological Department said. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for three coastal districts and nine other districts on Wednesday as very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.5 mm) accompanied by strong winds is likely. A red alert has been declared for three coastal districts and Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga and Chikmagalur districts on June 12, predicting that very heavy rainfall (more than 204.5 mm) is likely to occur along with thunderstorms.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Kodagu district on June 12 and 13, warning of winds gusting to 50 to 60 kmph and the possibility of heavy rainfall. The alert has also been extended to Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts.
According to the India Meteorological Department forecast, heavy rainfall is likely at some places in Kodagu on June 12, but heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds is likely at one or two places. A similar forecast has been issued till June 15, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in the same districts.
Prior to the red alert, a yellow alert was issued in Kodagu on June 10 and 11, with the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department attributed the adverse weather to several synoptic weather factors. The northern limit of the monsoon currently extends over some parts of the Arabian Sea and central India, including Mumbai and Adilabad, indicating a gradual advance of the southwest monsoon.
In addition, the circulation of an upper-level cyclonic circulation continues over the southeast and adjacent east-central parts of the Bay of Bengal, at a height of 5.8 to 7.6 km above mean sea level.
A heat wave has extended from north Tamil Nadu to south Maharashtra coast, passing through interior Karnataka at a height of 3.1 to 4.5 km above sea level. Officials have advised residents of Kodagu and other affected districts to be cautious and avoid travel during heavy rains.
