The Karnataka government has introduced significant reforms in the ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ scheme, one of its most popular guarantee programmes. Gruha Lakshmi Scheme New Rule: SIM Card Must Be in Name of beneficiary.
In a move aimed at eliminating fake and ineligible beneficiaries, the government has made it mandatory for the mobile SIM card linked to the scheme to be registered in the name of the woman head of the household.
The new transparency measure has been introduced to ensure that financial assistance reaches only genuine and eligible beneficiaries. The government aims to strengthen the verification process and prevent misuse of the scheme by ensuring direct communication and authentication through the beneficiary’s own mobile number.
During an internal review of the scheme, authorities reportedly identified several irregularities. Instances were found where financial assistance was being transferred to the accounts of around two lakh deceased beneficiaries. There were also cases where money was reportedly reaching accounts belonging to husbands or individuals from other states instead of the actual beneficiaries.
Following directions from Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, the beneficiary database has been thoroughly revised to remove discrepancies and ensure greater accuracy. Based on the updated eligibility criteria, around 1.24 crore genuine beneficiaries have now been identified and the revised list has been finalised.
Meanwhile, eligible women beneficiaries have received another major update, as the government is preparing to release the of the scheme. An amount of Rs 2,480 crore is set to be transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The government stated that 32 instalments have already been successfully distributed under the scheme, with measures taken to prevent corruption and ensure transparency. With the implementation of the latest verification rules, authorities aim to make sure that the benefits of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme reach only deserving women across Karnataka.
