iPhone 18 Launch May Be Delayed as iPhone 18 Pro Takes Center Stage

Apple may be preparing for one of its biggest changes to the iPhone launch strategy in years. Instead of unveiling the entire iPhone 18 family together in September 2026, the company is reportedly considering a staggered launch.

Under the reported plan, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could arrive in September, along with a new foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, meanwhile, may be pushed to early 2027.

This would mark a notable departure from Apple’s recent approach. The company has traditionally introduced its standard iPhone alongside the Pro and Pro Max models during its September event. If the reported schedule goes ahead, that pattern could change from this year.

The expected launch plan could see the premium models arriving first, followed by more affordable models several months later. Reports suggest the September 2026 lineup could include the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a possible second generation iPhone Air could then follow in spring 2027.

Why the iPhone 18 Pro could become the main model

With the regular iPhone 18 potentially absent from the September lineup, the iPhone 18 Pro would become the entry point to Apple’s new flagship generation at that time.

That is why some reports describe the Pro model as the new default iPhone for the 2026 launch period. This is not an official Apple designation. It simply reflects the possibility that customers looking for a new iPhone during the September launch may have to choose a Pro model rather than the regular version.

The change could also alter Apple’s usual pricing strategy. The standard iPhone has generally appealed to customers looking for a balance between price and flagship features. If it arrives later, the Pro model could temporarily fill that position for buyers upgrading during the September cycle.

Several upgrades are also expected for the iPhone 18 Pro. Reports point to a new A20 Pro chip, improved power efficiency and camera enhancements. A variable aperture for the main camera has also been discussed, which could provide greater control over the amount of light entering the lens.

Apple could also reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. However, claims about completely moving Face ID beneath the display remain uncertain and should be treated as speculation until Apple confirms the technology.

For now, Apple has not officially announced the iPhone 18 launch schedule. The reported two stage strategy could therefore still change before the company reveals its plans.
