Heavy Rain Floods Mumbai Pune Expressway Tunnel After Landslide Forces Road Closure

Relentless rainfall triggered flooding inside the Mumbai Pune Expressway Missing Link tunnel and caused a major landslide forcing authorities to close the route as a safety precaution.

Heavy monsoon rain has disrupted traffic on the Mumbai Pune Expressway after a major landslide and flooding affected the under construction Missing Link project. Authorities closed the route as a precaution after rocks and debris tumbled onto the roadway, raising serious safety concerns.

One of the most striking scenes emerged from the newly built tunnel, where large volumes of water poured down from the hillside like a waterfall. Videos shared on social media showed water rushing through the tunnel, creating river like conditions inside and alarming motorists passing through the area.

Officials said the continuous rainfall triggered a landslide on the hillside near the tunnel. Large rocks and mud slid onto the road, forcing authorities to completely shut the affected stretch of the expressway. Fortunately, no vehicles were caught in the landslide, preventing what could have been a major accident.

The Missing Link project is a key infrastructure development designed to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune while bypassing the steep and winding Khandala Ghat section. The project includes modern tunnels and elevated roads aimed at improving traffic flow on one of Maharashtra’s busiest highways.

However, the flooding inside the tunnel during the first phase of intense monsoon rain has raised fresh questions about drainage and safety arrangements at the construction site. Authorities are expected to inspect the affected section before allowing traffic to resume, while efforts continue to clear debris and assess any structural impact caused by the heavy rainfall.
