A patient had a narrow escape after pieces of a hospital ceiling fell onto a bed inside a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Amravati district. The incident has raised fresh questions about the safety and maintenance of the aging hospital building.
The accident occurred in one of the wards where a section of the ceiling plaster suddenly came loose and crashed onto a patient’s bed. Fortunately, the patient suffered no major injuries and was immediately shifted to another bed as a precaution.
The incident created panic among other patients, their attendants, and hospital staff. Medical officials rushed to the ward soon after receiving information about the collapse and inspected the affected area.
Hospital authorities said only a small portion of the ceiling had fallen and confirmed that the patient was safe. Officials also acknowledged that the government hospital building is old and stated that its structural condition had already been assessed. They added that repair work would be carried out to prevent similar incidents.
The incident comes at a time when Maharashtra has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. Rainwater reportedly entered parts of the hospital building, leaving several wards waterlogged and causing inconvenience to patients and healthcare workers.
Following the ceiling collapse, concerns have grown over the condition of the hospital infrastructure, with many questioning whether timely maintenance and repairs could have prevented the incident. Authorities are expected to review the safety of the building as restoration work begins.
