Husband sets wife ablaze over ‘nighty’ dispute in Belagavi; woman critical

Belagavi : In a shocking case of domestic violence, a man allegedly set his wife on fire over a dispute related to her attire in Nandgad area of Khanapur taluk in Belagavi district. The victim, identified as Manjula Patil, has sustained severe burn injuries and is battling for life.
According to police, the accused Krishna Patil reportedly attacked his wife following a heated argument at their residence. The couple, who had been married for eight years, were said to have frequent quarrels over the woman wearing a nighty or gown instead of a saree at home.
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused objected to his wife’s choice of clothing and the argument escalated uncontrollably,” a police officer said. “In a fit of rage, he allegedly poured fuel on her and set her ablaze.”
Manjula suffered nearly 80 per cent burn injuries and was initially rushed to the district hospital in Belagavi. Due to the severity of her condition, family members later shifted her to a hospital in Goa for advanced treatment. Doctors have described her condition as critical.
Neighbours who heard the commotion alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and took the accused into custody. “We responded immediately after receiving information from locals. The accused has been detained and further investigation is underway,” the officer added.
The incident has once again highlighted the disturbing trend of domestic disputes turning violent over trivial issues. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of attempt to murder and domestic violence laws.
Authorities are now recording statements from family members and witnesses to establish the sequence of events. Officials said further legal action will depend on the victim’s medical condition and statement once she is able to speak.
