US flags Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir as ‘red flag’ over Iran links

Washington : Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir has reportedly been flagged as a “red flag” by US intelligence agencies and sections of the American media, citing concerns over his alleged close ties with Iran’s military leadership.
According to reports, Munir is believed to share longstanding personal connections with leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His reported association with slain Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and current IRGC chief Hossein Salami has raised alarms within the US security establishment.
Analysts have pointed to what they describe as Munir’s “dual approach” in diplomacy—wearing military attire during engagements with Iranian officials while opting for formal suits during meetings with US counterparts—interpreting it as a sign of strategic ambiguity.
Security experts in Washington have drawn parallels with past US-Pakistan relations, particularly during the War in Afghanistan, when Pakistan was considered a US ally but was later accused of supporting the Taliban. The presence of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad had further deepened mistrust between the two nations.
Officials now fear that Munir, while projecting himself as a mediator between the US and Iran, could act in favour of Iranian interests. Reports suggest he is currently involved in backchannel diplomacy aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran, but US agencies remain cautious about placing full trust in his role.
Interestingly, former US President Donald Trump has publicly praised Munir, referring to him as “my favourite field marshal” and a strong military leader. Despite such remarks, American intelligence circles continue to view Munir’s Iran connections with suspicion.
Munir had earlier met Trump at the White House along with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. While diplomatic engagements continue, the US security establishment appears wary, categorising Munir as a potentially risky figure in the evolving geopolitical landscape.
